How To Remove Mac Protector / Mac Defender

What is Mac Protector / Mac Defender:
Lot's of people have been having problems lately with a program called Mac Protector or Mac Defender. This program is considered Malware or a Virus, Do not download this program. The goal of Mac Protector / Mac Defender is to trick you into thinking you have a virus so you will download the application, do not fall for this trick. If you happen to be one of the unfortunate people who did download Mac Protector / Mac Defender you will find a guide below that should remove the application from your computer. Feel free to post any question in the comments.

How To remove MacProtector / Mac Defender:
  1. First step is to click the Spotlight magnifying glass icon (top right of the screen) or press cmd + Space.
  2. Now type in Activity Monitor and press Enter.
  3. In the list, click on MacProtector / Mac Defender.
  4. Click the Quit Process button.
  5. Click Force Quit.
  6. Now go to your Applications folder.
  7. Delete the MacProtector / Mac Defender file by dragging it into the trash and then empty the trash.
  8. Click the Apple icon in the top left of the screen, then click System Preferences.
  9. Click Accounts, under system.
  10. Now click on your username on the left.
  11. Click the Login Items tab, these are the items that run when your computer starts.
  12. If MacProtector / Mac Defender is there click on it, then click the minus (-) button.
  13. Now your all done, if everything went correctly you are now free of Mac protector / Mac Defender.

By default, when you click on a downloadable link in Safari, your Mac will automatically download, save it, and then open it. For websites that contain malware this is not good. It is a good idea to disable Automatic File Opening in Safari to prevent things like this from happening. Here is how:
  1. Open Safari.
  2. In the top left of the screen click the Safari menu, then click on Preferences.
  3. There are a few tabs at the top, Click the General tab.
  4. Your going to want to uncheck the "Open 'safe' files after downloading" option. (Picture Below)

I thought I had a virus, that I actually allowed on my computer, by entering my pw, and installing it, thinking it was an actual apple product that was an update for my computer, it starting bringing up porn sites, etc., of which was not welcomed...thank you again!

  6. I didn't know that ANYTHING could download without me allowing it to. Scary indeed. I immediately force quit Safari and trashed the MacProtector app which appeared. What a bummer that Mac computers aren't as safe as once they were.

  8. OMG! I am crying for happy. After an extremely frustrating day, ending up on all sorts of pay sites for $70 removal, and living on disability, there was no way I could afford that. Almost ready to give up, I landed here. I followed the instructions, and that nasty malware is GONE. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am SO deeply grateful.

  16. Thank you for posting this. I'm glad I was able to get rid off this malware and its unnecessary garbage porn. The steps were very easy to follow, simple just like anything Mac should be. I never been to this site before but I'll be checking it out from now on.
